UWI Consulting Inc. has a highly qualified management and administrative core team. We ensure the effective design, execution, and monitoring of project work and programmes to produce timely responses to clients’ needs.

Executive Management

Ms. Lisa Cummins – Executive Director

Ms. Cummins brings to the UWIC Team, years of experience in Caribbean regional development, trade, international relations, public policy and  private sector development.Prior to joining UWIC, Ms. Cummins served as a diplomat and as Executive Director of the Barbados Coalition of Service Industries. During her 10-year diplomatic career, she worked at the Headquarters of the Barbados Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade as well as in the Barbados Embassy in Washington D.C. She also served as Trade Adviser for the Commonwealth Secretariat to the Government of Uganda and the wider East African region, as Uganda’s lead technical adviser on trade in services. In that capacity, she was a member of the negotiating team for services in the East African Community trade talks with Europe and the EAC Common Market and has worked on projects in East and Southern Africa for several development partners including the World Bank, UNCTAD, the European Union and Trade Mark East Africa. She also serves on multiple boards regionally and internationally. Ms Cummins is the current Chairman of the Inter-American Development Bank’s Civil Society Consultative Committee and President Elect of the Rotary Club of Barbados.

Professor Claremont Kirton – Deputy Executive Director

Professor Claremont Kirton is a longstanding UWI faculty member, he first joined the staff of The University of the West Indies as a Lecturer in the Department of Economics in 1977. He has also served as Visiting Professor/Scholar at universities in the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Curacao, Suriname, Cuba and Guyana. Professor Kirton has researched and published in the area of economic development and planning, banking and finance, regional integration, small and micro-enterprises, and climate change.Over his illustrious career, Professor Kirton has authored and co-authored numerous consultancy reports for various regional agencies and government. In addition, he has authored/co-authored reports for the European Commission, World Bank, United Nations Development UNDP, UNECLAC, IDB, FAO, Commonwealth Secretariat, CARICOM, Caribbean Development Bank and OXFAM among others.

Core Team

 Projects and Portfolio Manager – Sharifa N. Powell

Ms. Powell serves UWI Consulting in the capacity of Programme and Portfolio Manager. Prior to joining UWI Consulting, Ms. Powell served as Operations Consultant with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). Her training and experience in International Trade Law (LLM, University of Leeds, UK) and International Trade Policy (MSc., UWI Barbados) has enabled her to successfully work with the Commonwealth Secretariat as a part of the Hub and Spokes Programme to provide capacity building and advisory services to the Republic of Bostwana. She has worked as an Independent Consultant on several projects in Southern Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific involving governments, regional organisations and international development partners. Ms. Powell provides a mixture of international trade policy, trade law and project development and management skills.

Project Manager –  Barbara Foster

Ms. Foster is a Project Manager with UWI Consulting. She holds a M.Sc. in Education from Barry University, Florida, a  B.Ed. in Educational Administration, University of the West Indies, Mona and a Certificate in Project Management from the University of New Orleans. Ms. Foster has over 12 years of experience in Project Management and has worked with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ). As Project Manager she has coordinated projects funded by Agencies such as Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), World Bank (WB) and Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the government of Jamaica. Her experience also spans working as a Training and Development Consultant/Director with the Management Institute for National Development (MIND) and Academy Manager with HEART/NTA.

Project & Administrative Assistant – Kerryann Hodges

Ms Hodges is holds a B.A. in Library and Information Studies, with a minor in Philosophy from The University of the West Indies. Ms Hodges has skills in research methods and analysis and her responsibilities at UWI Consulting include project procurement, report writing, monitoring and coordination.

Research & Communications Officer – Daenia Ashpole

Ms. Ashpole serves UWI consulting in the capacity of Research and Communications Officer. She is an International Trade Specialist by profession and previously held positions in the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce and its agency the Jamaica Promotions Corporation (JAMPRO) and the Ministry of National Security. Prior to joining UWI Consulting, she held the position of Trade Liaison Officer within the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce. Ms. Ashpole holds a M.Sc. in International Trade Policy from the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill and a B.Sc. in International Relations and Spanish from the University of the West Indies, Mona. She has been involved in various project related to national and regional development, particularly on topics related to the creative industries, climate change, green economy, health and wellness tourism, and youth violence prevention
